RIC Commemoration and Ireland’s Maturity In Dealing With Our History

On Thursday’s Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey was joined by Dr. Tomás Mac Conmara, East Clare Memorial Committee and the author of The Scariff Martyrs: War, Murder and Memory in East Clare.

The proposed state commemoration of the police force that was scheduled to be held in Dublin in January 2020 was abandoned after a major controversy erupted, but it has now been given a new lease of life.

A commemorative event for the RIC – marking the centenary of their disbandment in 1922 – is to be held in St Paul’s Cathedral in London next April and is being hosted by the British-based Police Roll of Honour Trust following an approach from members of the Historical and Reconciliation Police (HARP) Society. Made up of former Gardaí, who had also been central to initiating the proposed event in Dublin.
