Increase In Number Of People With Disabilities Waiting To Enter Residential Care

On Tuesday’s Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey was joined by Dermot Hayes, Disability Activist based in Corofin and full time carer from Shannon, Marion Costello.

The number of people with disabilities waiting to enter residential care has increased by 67 percent since 2019.

Figures by The Irish Examiner show that 1,296 people are waiting for a place.

The current waiting time has sparked major concern for families, who say they worry about the future, as they don’t know who will care for their loved ones.

Dermot expressed his disbelief and concern while Marion highlighted that carers must be looked after too and with the current carers allowances it is nearly impossible for them to make a living.
