Cronan Residents Protest Over Grass Cutting In Estate

On Friday’s Morning Focus, Alan was joined by Derek Clune, Chairman of the Cronan Residents Association and Chair of Shannon Tidy Towns. Derek discussed the upcoming protest that was set to take place outside of The Shannon Municipal District Offices on Friday April 21st at 10am. He aired his frustration at the current grass cutting situation in the Cronan Estate in Shannon which is the biggest estate in the local area.
Clare County Council have since issued the following statement:

“Shannon Municipal District has a grass-cutting contract in place which encompasses over 300 hectares within the MD Area.  The feedback has been very positive with regard to the standard of the work with particular acknowledgement coming from the Shannon Tidy Towns Committee.

Shannon MD wishes to confirm that a full grass cut was carried out at Cronan Estates on 28th February 2023.  This was ahead of schedule as ground conditions at that time allowed for early cutting.

Unfortunately, due to adverse wet weather conditions and after on-site inspections were conducted in the following weeks, it was not possible to carry out further cuts in certain parts of the Cronan Estates.   This was due to the ground being very wet – the month of March was the wettest in Ireland’s recording history.   The 2-tonne ride-on lawnmowers will cause considerable ground damage thereby leaving parts of the green areas unmanageable.  As per the grass cutting schedule, Cronan Estates were visited last week and while some areas were cut, it was not possible to complete the full cut cycle due to the ground conditions.

Shannon Municipal District confirms that in line with its grass-cutting schedule, and as confirmed to a representative of the Cronan Residents at a meeting with MD officials on 20th April 2023, that the grass will be cut at this location next week (weather permitting). Improving biodiversity and encouraging bees, other pollinators and wildlife is also an important consideration.

Shannon Municipal District wishes to acknowledge the co-operation and partnership approach adopted by the communities within the Municipal District Area and looks forward to ongoing positive working relationships throughout 2023.
