Should bicycle helmets be a legal requirement?

Due to the pandemic, public transport is running on a limited capacity in order to facilitate social distancing. Currently buses are running at 50% capacity. It comes as no surprise then that more and more people are taking up cycling as a greener alternative. But, is it safe to cycle in Ireland? What would make it safer for cyclists in this country? Well, according to a Galway TD, wearing helmets would not! Fine Gael Deputy Ciaran Cannon tweeted his support of the Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan’s, decision to resist calls to make helmets a legal requirement – saying it would in fact discourage people from cycling. Ciaran is now calling for a proper debate of the measures needed to make cycling safer for all.

On Friday’s Morning Focus, Gavin Grace spoke to Fine Gael TD and avid cyclist, Ciaran Cannon.
