China’s parliament has named Xi Jinping as president four months after he took charge of the Communist Party with pledges of reform.

In a ceremony in the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square, Mr Xi was "elected" by delegates to the National People’s Congress, the country’s rubber-stamp parliament.
The 59 year old, who paid a three day visit to Ireland last year, during which he visited a farm in Sixmilebridge in Clare now formally takes the reins of the world’s second-largest economy for the next decade.
