Women Hardest-Hit In Recession

Married and co-habiting women have been hit significantly harder by Government austerity measures and harsh budgets.

A new report from the ESRI shows that women have suffered a drop of around 15% in disposable income, compared to 9% for men.

Adjustments to tax, welfare and public sector pay during the five years between 2009 and 2013 have impacted more on women

This is because a higher proportion of women work in the public service and are more likely to be in receipt of benefits like children's allowance – which has been cut by 25 percent.

Households where both parents work have seen a 13 percent drop in disposable income since the recession.
