Varadkar Rules Out Shannon Rail-Link

The Transport Minister has poured cold water on renewed suggestions that a rail link should be developed to Shannon Airport.

The call has been made during a Seanad debate on legislation which will formally establish Clare's international airport on an independent, state-owned footing.

This heard arguments that train access to Shannon would benefit the Western seabord, by keeping tourists in this part of the country rather than seeing them drive directly to Dublin.

A 2006 report on the matter found that this would cost €660 million, which Leo Varadkar says is too prohibitive.
