Varadkar ‘Middle Class’ Claims Don’t Stand Up To Scrutiny Says Economist

An economist says Leo Varadkar’s claim that the ‘middle class’ includes workers on the minimum wage doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.

SIPTU’s Marie Sherlock says while the claim could be true, it’s difficult to define a full-time average worker as being in the middle class.

She says the middle class is usually seen as someone with some comfortable standard of living – and the minimum wage of 9.25 an hour does not provide it.
