Uisce Éireann is submitting plans for the controversial water supply project which will pump water from the River Shannon to Dublin.
It’s the largest-ever water scheme in Irish history.
The Water Supply Project Eastern and Midlands Region will run for 170 kilometres, from the River Shannon to Dublin.
It will primarily deliver safe, secure drinking water to Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow, with the spin of infrastructure also providing the capacity for future offtakes to serve communities along the route in Tipperary, Offaly, and Westmeath.
Maria O’Dwyer, Infrastructure Delivery Director at Uisce Éireann, says the greater Dublin area is in urgent need of the supply.
The project will utilise just 2 per cent of the long-term average flow at Parteen Basin.
But, land is also needed, and Senior Programme Manger Gary Gibson says they’re working on that.
Planning for the project is being submitted next week, with hopes construction will begin in 2028 and be completed in five years, with estimated costs of up to 5.96 billion euro.
