Uisce Eireann Submits Plans For Controversial Water Supply Project From River Shannon

Uisce Eireann has submitted a planning application for the largest-ever water project in Irish history, which would see water pumped from the River Shannon to Dublin.

The Strategic Infrastructure Development planning application and Compulsory Purchase Order application for the Water Supply Project Eastern and Midlands Region, which consists of over 500 documents, has now been lodged with An Coimisiún Pleanála.

When delivered, the once in a generation project promises to ensure a sustainable, secure and resilient supply of drinking water to the Greater Dublin Area and wider Eastern and Midlands region, which the water utility says is necessary to support a growing population and economy, including the increased demand for housing.

Subject to a successful planning application, Uisce Éireann proposes to start construction in 2028, with completion within five years and a budget estimate of between €4.58 billion and €5.96 billion.
