A County Longford man attempting to put a stop to plans for a new ballroom at US President Donald Trump’s resort in West Clare has dismissed the proposal as “nonsense”.
Liam Madden of Convent Road, Longford, has lodged an appeal with An Coimisiún Pleanála against the proposed development at Trump International Golf Links and Hotel Doonbeg which was granted planning permission by the local authority last month.
Trump International Golf Links Ireland Enterprises is seeking to demolish Doughmore House and ancillary buildings to build a single-storey ballroom building as well as other enhancements on the site.
Despite a number of objections, including one from Liam Madden, Clare County Council granted planning permission on February 23rd of this year.
Now, the Longford resident is seeking to halt the development with an appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála which alleges that elements of the application are “illegal and designed to mislead the casual observer”.
Specifically, the appeal argues that the documentation doesn’t comply with planning and development regulations and states this “cannot be remedied”.
It says the proposed helicopter airfield wasn’t considered in the environmental impact assessment screening which it claims could have adverse effects on the native vertigo angustior snail.
It also contends that the deterioration of the snail’s population in recent years “can be attributed to nothing other than the development taken as a whole since its inception”.
It adds it’s “theoretically possible” the snail has been subjected to “extinction and annihilation” due to construction on the site.
Mr Madden asks An Coimisiún Pleanála to “please, refuse this nonsense” in his application.
The commission has until July 9th to make a ruling on the appeal.
