A traveller family which left a halting site near a Sixmilebridge graveyard following a near stand-off with local residents say they did so because they feared for their children's safety.

However, local representatives in the town insist violence was never a possibility, as Clare FM's Amy Ryan reports.

The O'Donoghue family left the area near Ballysheen Cemetery on Monday night, hours after Gardaí had intervened to stop a confrontation with locals.

Up to 100 people gathered at Sixmilebridge GAA pitch, amid claims that the graveyard was being damaged and even being used as a toilet.

Gardaí prevented any confrontation, though they then visited the O'Donoghues to inform them of the situation, and the family moved on hours later.

Anthony O'Donoghue insists that they hadn't damaged graveyard, and says he had no option but to leave.

However, Sixmilebridge Independent Councillor PJ Ryan, who met with the family in their caravan on Monday night, says it was always the intention that the situation would be resolved peacefully.
