The project is currently at the detailed design phase and will involve the construction of two new theatres with associated accommodation, four new recovery bays, a Central Sterile Supply Department and all associated refurbishment works.

The HSE confirmed the submission following presentations from Clare Independent TD Michael McNamara concerning low theatre utilisation rates in the county town.

The most recent figures provided by the HSE show that Nenagh Hospital’s elective theatre utilisation rate was 81% in May 2022 compared to 47% at Ennis Hospital.

Furthermore, the overall operation time (hours) recorded from January to May 2022 in Nenagh was 607 hours compared to just 237 hours in Ennis.
