The incident happened at around 5 o'clock last evening, and the Garda Ombudsman has launched an investigation.

Gardaí were chasing two men, who were driving a Hyundai Accent, after it was believed that the pair had been involved in a number of burglaries in the Doonas area of Clonlara.

Shortly after 5 o'clock, the chase entered Parteen village when the car crashed into the men and into two cars which were parked outside the pitch and putt course opposite Browne's bar.

The three pensioners were all seriously injured.  They were taken to University Hospital Limerick, and one of the victims is believed to have lost a leg.

The two men who were being chased fled the scene and Gardai carried out a search of the area.

One man was later arrested and he is being questioned at Mayorstone Park Garda station, while search efforts continue for the second.

The Garda Ombudsman was notified of the incident and an investigation is underway.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to come forward.  The road has re-opened this morning.
