Joan Burton was responding to a question by Clare TD Timmy Dooley who has raised concerns about the trauma and pain people are facing as flood waters recede.

Clare's Fianna Fáíl TD has raised concerns about what he's described as the trauma and pain faced by people in flood-hit communities.

Timmy Dooley says families are in facing a huge financial burden as a result of the additional cost of damage to their properties and of hiring or purchasing pumps.

Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Dooley said many families have no insurance to cover the cost and he fears that some will be forced to turn to money lenders as a result.

The Tánaiste has defended her department's reponse saying that payments have been made to up to 300 families to cover the cost of damage and that she herself and communtiy welfare officers have been visiting the homes of those affected.

Joan Burton says every effort is being made to ease the burden on people in flood-hit communities.

A Springfield resident says his family are only beginning to assess the cost, having only returned to their home on Sunday.

Mike Hogan, his wife and four children spent 7 weeks in alternative accomodation, during which time he says the financial cost continued to build.

Mike says his family no longer want to remain in their home and he says the community will have to come together in the coming weeks to find answers on how to move forward.
