The Satellite COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic, which opened at University Maternity Hospital Limerick on Monday is to remain at the hospital next week.

It’s in a bid to offer safe, convenient vaccination for expectant mums attending the hospital and inpatients who wish to be vaccinated.

NIAC has advised that pregnant women can receive mRNA vaccines at any stage of pregnancy, but as it stands, only 31% of patients admitted to the maternity hospital in Limerick have been innoculated.

Associate Clinical Director of Maternal and Child Health with the UL Hospitals Group, Dr Naro Imcha is reassuring all pregnant women that the Covid-19 vaccination is safe and is the best way to protect yourself and your baby from the virus.

She says a small number of expectant mothers, who haven’t received the vaccine, have been admitted to into critical care at the region’s maternity hospital, which she says is concerning.

The Driector of Midwifery at University Maternity Hospital Limerick says the fourth wave of the pandemic has had more of an effect on pregnant women than any other over the last 18 months.

Eileen Ronan says this new challenge has strengthened their determination to share information with expectant mothers, so that they can make an informed decision.

She it’s a sensitive and difficult time for many women, but she says there are systems in place to help them make their decision.

Expectant or new mums with concerns about the vaccine are urged to contact the maternity hospital’s dedicated vaccination helpline on 087-359 3568 from 9am to 2.30pm, Monday to Friday.
