The SIPTU Trade Union is being accused of trying to shut down Shannon, Cork and Dublin Airports ahead of one of the busiest weekends of the year.

The Dublin Airport Authority says this Friday's four hour work stoppage will have the catastrophic effect of shutting down the country's main airports ahead of St Patrick's Day.

Siptu is planning industrial action at Cork, Dublin and Shannon airports as part of a row about deficits in the joint pension scheme of Aer Lingus and the DAA.

The airport authority claims the ballot in favour of strike action was defective and that police, security and fire staff are bound by an agreement not to interrupt essential services.

Ryanair is also looking for an injunction to stop Friday's airport disruption – the case continues.
