The number of passengers flying through Shannon Airport for the month of September has increased by over 20,000 in the space of a year.
New CSO figures show it was the busiest September in the history of the Clare base.
Approximately 210,724 passengers either departed or touched down at Shannon Airport in September, a rise of over 10% in the last year.
It’s also by far the busiest September on record for Shannon, with passenger numbers rising by more than 44,000 since 2019.
The bulk of traffic unsurprisingly went to destinations in the UK, accounting for 31% of all activity, the United States 18%, while Portugal and Spain were the next most popular, making up another 40% of passenger traffic combined.
Additionally during the month, Shannon handled over 130,000 tonnes of freight , with this figure gradually declining since Aer Lingus’ decision to wind down its cargo operations at Shannon last year.
