Robbie McMahon dies after short illness

Tributes are being paid to one of County Clare’s Best known singers, Robbie McMahon, who has died following an illness.

The so-called "King of Spancillhill" was best known for his famous rendition of the song that immortalised his own native parish, as well as other legendary ballads like the Fleadh Down in Ennis.

Robbie was in his mid eighties and passed away at Limerick Regional Hospital this morning.

He was also honoured by his native County in 2010 when he received a civic reception at Clare County Council and spoke about the importance of preserving traditional music and singing .

The late Robbie McMahon is  survived by his wife Maura and their four children, Fiona and Noleen who live in County Clare and Dympna  and Donal who live in New Zealand.
