New proposals aimed at reducing speed limits in Clare school zones have been described as a vital move for child safety.
The plans were unveiled at yesterday’s meeting of Clare County Council’s Physical Strategic Policy Committee.
Under the plans, school zones would be subject to reduced 30km/h speed limits during designated drop-off and collection times.
Outside of this, the speed limits would revert back to the regular 50km/h limits.
Ennis Environmental Action Group Spokesperson Bridget Ginnity believes it’s an essential step to take for child safety.
The proposals are due to go out to public consultation in the coming weeks, with pilot projects expected to be initiated in Cratloe and Kilrush.
Clare Road Safety Working Group member and Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle says it’s vital all residents thoroughly express their views.
Speed limit changes aren’t just coming to school zones, with a section of the R352 in Tulla set to be reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h, along with sections of road connecting Ennis and Crusheen and Meelick and Coonagh.
Physical SPC Chair and Whitegate Fine Gael Councillor Pat Burke says driver behaviour will remain the most important factor regardless of any changes to come.
