The latest pressure on Donald Trump in a week of scandals surrounding the President comes following a meeting in February during which it is alleged that he tried to shut down an FBI inquiry into his former National Security Advisor.

The FBI was investigating alleged links between Michael Flynn and the Russian government and The New York Times reports that in a meeting with former FBI director James Comey, the President said “I hope you can let this go”.

The newspaper says the information’s contained in memos Mr Comey made after his meetings with President Trump.

Mr Comey is the same man fired by Trump just last week and this leak appears to have come from someone who is close to the ex-FBI head.

The White House is rejecting the report but prominent Democrat Congressman Adam Schiff wants Mr Comey to explain what happened.

James Comey is now being asked to furnish all documents related to his contacts with the White House.

Chairman of the House Oversight Committee Jason Chaffetz says he’s willing to issue a subpoena, which would force him to hand the papers over.

The BBC’s North American Correspondent Anthony Zurcher says it could prove to be a major headache.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Premier is insisting that Donald Trump did not pass secret information to it’s foreign Minister, even though President Trump appeared to admit that he did so.

In the past half hour, Vladimir Putin even said he can give a record of the conversation between Donald Trump and Sergei Lavrov to the U.S. senate and congress.
