Postmasters have reacted angrily to a call from the Department of Social Protection encouraging people to receive welfare payments directly into their bank accounts.

The Irish Postmasters' Union says the move undercuts the post office network by driving people away from it.
Social welfare payments form a key part of their revenue streams, accounting for 30% of all business.
Clarecastle man and Limeick-based postmaster Tom O'Callaghan feels that hurting this income in any way threatens the viability of post offices.
