It’s been argued positive discrimination is needed to fill the vacant GP role in Kilrush.
The West Clare town, which has a population of 2,649 people, remains without a full-time general practicioner although a locum doctor has been in place since May 2021.

The HSE says the role has been advertised on three occasions yet no “suitable applications” have been received.
Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District and Kilrush Independent Councillor Ian Lynch says GP contracts must be made more attractive to young people to entice them to rural areas.
