A new general purpose sports centre is being planned for an East Clare community experiencing rapid population growth.
The proposed development at Brookville House in Broadford will aim to tackle existing capacity constraints in the region and ensure playing facilities are available all-year round.
In recent years, Broadford has taken steps to optimise it’s existing playing facilities, having upgraded it’s GAA pitch with a new spectator stand, ballwall and clubhouse.
But with 140 students now enrolled in the local national school and over 1,000 people residing in the parish , significant capacity constraints have come to light, particularly that the GAA pitch can be closed for six months in a year due to weather conditions.
A potential solution has been found though as a site has been acquired at Brookville House as well as grants of over €175,000 through various funding streams for an all-weather pitch, floodlights, car park and pedestrian crossing.
Broadford GAA Clubman Kevin Corcoran says it will be vital addition for the region as sometimes the lack of available playing spaces can be disheartening.
In line with Clare County Council’s Draft Sports Plan for 2024 to 2029, the facility will also aim to boost participation across soccer, athletics and other sports.
It’s estimated an additional €120,000 will be needed to realise the project and it’s hoped construction can commence in Spring and that playing boots can be on the grass by next Summer.
At 6pm on Sunday, a meeting will be held at Broadford Community Hall to allow residents to have their input on the future plans.
Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony O’Brien says securing the funding will be crucial.
