Clare County Council has refused permission for the construction of 16 new houses and a commercial building in Tulla.

The development was to have been located on the site of the former secondary school in the town, but had been the subject of objections from some local residents.

Ennis-based Woodhaven Developments Ltd. had sought permission to construct 16 houses at the junction of Chapel Street and the R462.

The development was also due to include a commercial building, including apartments, three shops and two office premises.

The development was to be located on the site of the former St. Joseph’s Secondary School in Tulla.

However, it had sparked concern among a number of local residents who lodged a total of 15 submissions on the plan, with some saying too many houses were planned for the site and that it would cause traffic issues.

The local authority has now decided to refuse permission for the development, after planner’s report said the project would contravene the ‘mixed use’ development objective for the site, while concerns were also raised about the amenity of the commercial and residential aspects.

Their decision can be further appealed to An Bord Pleanala.
