A newly-published map from the National Cancer registry shows a worryingly high rate of breast cancer in Dublin, while prostate cancer is also higher in the West than in most other parts of the country.

In Clare, though, of the 20 types of cancer that have been profiled over a nine-year period to 2012, none are higher here than would otherwise be expected.

There have been increases, however, in the rates of some forms of cancer here.

When compared with another survey covering the previous decade, instances of bladder, breast, colorectal and oesophageal cancers, as well as melanomas, are now in line with the national average, having previously been lower than this.

Despite this, the overall rate of cancers here remains "significantly lower" than would normally be expected.
