Clare County Council spent over €20,000 disposing of hazardous household materials last month.
The local authority’s Waste Enforcement Team also recovered over 28 tonnes of waste from a prominent tourist destination in October.
Dedicated amnesty days were declared across the county last month to facilitate the collection of mattresses and hazardous household waste. .
The household materials were collected from the Inagh Central waste Management facility on October 14th.
In total over 17.5 tonnes of waste was recovered from the public and transported off-site by a disposal company, at a cost to Clare County Council of €21,296.36.
Over 68% of the items gathered were paint cans and related materials, while the local authority also collected 1.9 tonnes of waste oil , 274kg of waste petrol, diesel and kerosene, 133kg of medicines, 653 kg of batteries, 350 kg of empty plastic containers and 283 kg of aerosol cans.
This cost of this operation is being recuperated under the Anti-Dumping initiative fund.
The Mattress amnesty event took place at marts across the county and in total 167 mattresses were collected in Kilfenora, 85 in Kilrush and 234 in Scariff.
At the Vandeleur Gardens in Kilrush meanwhile, 28.8 tonnes of waste was removed following an inter-agency clean up in conjunction with a private contractor.
The material was illegally dumped over a damaged wall which has now been repaired, while a permanent plan has been put in place to deter future activity at the site.
