Only slight rise in Lower Shannon water levels overnight

Water levels on the Lower River Shannon in the Springfield area rose only slightly overnight despite warnings of heavy rain for the area.

There were fears of further flooding in South East Clare as a heavy band of heavy rain approached but the local authority says that fortunately only 8 millimetres of rain fell in the area.

Water rose by two inches but levels in Lough Derg have now stabilised and the ESB is maintaining the flow of water from Parteen Weir at 470 cubic metres per second again today.

Senior Engineer with Clare Clare County Council, Hugh Mc Grath, who has been on the ground in Clonlara since the flooding began, says there'll be some respite for residents in the coming days.
