Number Of CPOs Commenced In Clare Last Year More Than Double 2024 Figure

The number of compulsory purchase orders commenced by Clare County Council last year was more than double its figure for 2024.

The local authority says it’s using the mechanism to “increase housing provision by bringing properties back into use or encouraging owners to bring them to market”.

A compulsory purchase order, or CPO, is the legal function local authorities can use to take land or property without the owner’s consent.

In 2025, Clare County Council commenced a total of 15 CPOs compared to just seven in 2024.

The Council says nine of these are at vesting stage and lodged with Tailte Éireann.

In the case of four, an objection has been received and sent to An Comisiúin Pleanála.

The CPO on one of the properties has been paused as it’s being sold by the owner while a further one is being refurbished by the Department of Housing.
