Clare’s Green Senator insists that now is not the time for a fourth electricity credit.

It comes as senior Ministers are meeting today to discuss extending some cost of living supports, which are due to finish at the of the month.

Coalition leaders and senior ministers are considering a new round of cost-of-living supports today.

The Taoiseach says the government will take a ‘targeted approach’ and will prioritise pensioners, social welfare recipients and families.

Leo Varadkar’s re-iterated however, that this new package wouldn’t be a mini-budget and added the coalition needs to strike a balance between being affordable for the taxpayer, and offering sufficient help to businesses.

There’s growing concern that the cut to the VAT rate for the tourism and hospitality sector will not be extended, despite calls for it to remain at 9 per cent.

Clare Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway believes the lower VAT rate should be in place permanently.

Meanwhile, the Green Party is expected to block the introduction of a fourth electricity credit this summer.

The party insists that further universal support aimed at helping families to offset set their energy bills should be delayed until later in the year.

Inagh Green Party Senator Roisin Garvey believes this is when it will be needed most.

An announcement outlining the details is expected to be made after next Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting.
