North Clare Nursing Home Failed ‘To Ensure An Effective And Safe Service’ – HIQA

Health inspectors say a North Clare nursing home has failed to ensure ‘an effective and safe service’ for its residents.

The findings are contained in a HIQA report published this week on St Dominic Savio Nursing Home in Liscannor.

The unannounced inspection took place on the 6th of July last, when 26 residents were on the premises.

HIQA’s report from the day says feedback from residents on the facility was ‘mixed’ with suggestions that some residents’ quality of life was ‘unsatisfactory’.

Communal rooms in the centre were deemed to be ‘in a poor state of repair’ with paint peeling off of some of the walls.

Health inspectors claimed there was a ‘poorly defined organisational structure’ at the nursing home, and that the provider had failed to take actions to address concerns noted during a previous inspection in December 2021.

The report also noted ‘insufficient levels of nursing staff’, while issues with the management of infection control ‘posed a continued risk to residents in the centre’.

St Dominic Savio Nursing Home was deemed ‘non compliant’ by HIQA in nine of the 15 areas it was assessed in, substantially compliant in three and fully compliant in the other three.

The facility says it’s ‘revisited’ its management structure and increased its staff compliment in response to the findings.

It also says it is taking steps to ‘robustly monitor’ its fire exits, while infection control measures have now been addressed.
