No Need For Panic Says Council After Arrival Of Portugese Man O’War On Clare Shores

Clare County Council says there’s no need for panic, following the arrival of one of the most toxic animals in the world on some of the county’s beaches.

The Portugese Man O’War, which can be identified by its bluish gas filled float, packs a powerful sting that can cause agonising pain, or in some cases death.

It’s been spotted in Lahinch, Kilkee and Doughmore in recent weeks.

But the local authority’s Water Safety Development Officer, Clare McGrath says it’s unusual for them to be in our waters and says people shouldn’t be overly alarmed, particularly with the low numbers seen here.

A Lahinch business owner says the Portugene Man O’War hasn’t been spotted there for a number of days.

Ben Bennett, from Ben’s Surf Clinic is confident that every step is being taken by all stakeholders in the area to ensure the beach is safe.
