New Limerick Bishop

A new Bishop has been chosen for the Diocese of Limerick,  three years after the resignation of Bishop Donal Murray.

The appointment of Fr. Brendan Leahy –  a professor of theology at St Patrick’s College in Maynooth – has been announced by Pope Benedict today.

The Limerick Diocese had been left without a Bishop since Dr. Donal Murray resigned following the publication of the Murphy Report in 2009 which found that he had mishandled sexual abuse allegations in the Archdiocese of Dublin.

The incoming Bishop, Fr. Brendan Leahy is a native of Dublin and has described his appointment is an opportunity for the diocese to begin again in faith, hope and love.
