23,561 domestic dwellings here were looked at by the Central Statistics Office for this study.

The vast majority – 63 percent – were given a rating of between C1 and D2, which is considered the middle ground of the 13-tier rating system for energy efficiency.

However, 8 percent, or more than 1,800 homes in this county surveyed were given the basement ‘G’ rating, which is above the national average.

The majority of these houses are likely to be among the oldest homes in Clare.

3 percent of houses here, or just over 700, got the best possible ‘A’ rating – quite a way again below the national average of 8 percent per county, though that’s distorted by the high average numbers in Dublin and a number of other Leinster counties.

Meanwhile, the average age of a home in Clare is now 33 years old, and 58 percent of houses in this county still use oil as their main form of heating.
