Million euro drop in Clare’s local roads allocation

Clare’s regional and local roads allocation has been cut for a third year in a row ..

Over 14 million euro is being provided to the county council for the repair and maintenance of routes right across Clare in 2011- a drop of over a million on last year and down 7 million on 2009 figures.

However monies provided to Ennis and Kilrush Town Councils have stayed at 2010 levels with 410 thousand earmarked for Ennis and a further 139 thousand going to Kilrush.

Overall this year 375 million euro is being provided for regional and local roads nationwide which include 150 million for a Restoration Improvement Programme while local authorities will also be provided with flexibility to change their programmes if necessary given the recent period of severe weather.

Clare Fianna Fail  Election candidate Timmy Dooley believes that despite the drop in funding, the monies will cover all the necessary costs.

However Fine Gael Clare Election Candidate Joe Carey believes the drop in funds is unacceptable and claims its points to the failings of the outgoing government.
