The number of children in the Midwest living in homelessness has risen by over 35% in the last year.
The latest report from the Department of Housing has found that there were almost 300 children in emergency accommodation across the region in December 2025.
A total of 16,734 people were residing in emergency accommodation nationwide in the week of the 22nd to the 28th of December 2025.
Of these, 11,546 were adults while 5,188 were children.
In the Midwest, 686 adults were homeless in the week in question which was up 139 for the same time last year.
Clare accounted for 100 of these adults which was only an increase of two compared to the previous month.
The data also reveals that 292 child dependents were living in emergency accommodation at the end of December – indicating a 36% increase in a year.
