A Clare TD, who has sought to amend Ireland's abortion laws, says he doesn't believe that there is an appetite amongst governments to tackle the issue.
Deputy Michael McNamara's comments come in light of an Amnesty International report, which said the lives of Irish women are being put at risk by a ‘deliberate denial of care’, and separate figures from the UK Department of Health which found that 3,700 women travelled there from Ireland in order to undergo a termination.
At least 59 of those were from Clare.
A number of anti-abortion groups have criticised Amnesty's report, but the East Clare TD, who has already sought to introduce a bill to allow for abortions here in cases where there is a fatal foetal abnormality, is not convinced that anything will occur.
