The Mayor of Ennis insists putting a British “war trophy” in the town’s Peace Park doesn’t represent a contradiction.
Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard has proposed relocating the “Russian Gun”, which is a piece of artillery used in the Crimean War which was gifted by the British Government to Ennis in 1958, from its current home at the Courthouse to the Peace Park.
Councillor Howard claims the park, which contains memorials to Clare’s fallen in World War One, World War Two and the Vietnam War, would be a “more appropriate place” for the object.
Responding to Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle who’s suggested the item is a symbol of British imperialism and therefore shouldn’t be in the Peace Park, she says we’re now in a “different time”.
