Man in court over Shannon Airport drug seizure

 

A man’s due before Ennis District Court today charged in connection with a drugs seizure at Shannon Airport last week.

53 year Martin Birtwistle, of no fixed abode is facing two charges contrary to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 including possession of a kilo of cannabis worth 12 thousand euro for sale or supply.

Last week Galway District Court heard the UK national was arrested at Shannon Airport at 1.40 am on Monday the 15th of August  after arriving on a Ryanair flight from Grenada in Spain.

Garda Sean O’Murchu gave evidence of arresting the 53 year old and when charged and caution he made no reply.

The court heard that the accused lived in a commune on the side of a mountain in Grenada.

Judge Gibbons reserved his decision on an application for free legal aid and remanded Birtwistle in custody to Ennis District Court this morning
