A former sports coach has denied three counts of rape against a male more than a decade ago.
At Ennis District Court yesterday, the 70-year old man – who cannot be named for legal reasons – appeared in court charged in connection with five alleged sex offences, including three counts of rape.
The court heard that the man issued various denials to the alleged rapes when charged.
Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Garda Michelle Holian said that the man replied “That’s totally untrue. That never happened” when charged with committing rape on the male between January 1999 and September 2000.
He also denied two other counts of rape.
Garda Holian also told the court that when charged with one of two sexual assault offences against the same male during the same period, the accused said ‘he slept in my house one night, and there was touching I’m admitting to.’
Judge Patrick Durcan granted legal aid and remanded the accused to appear before Ennis District Court on October 16th when a Book of Evidence is expected to be served.
