Man Arrested As Shot Is Fired In Sixmilebridge Altercation

A man has been arrested after three people were held at gunpoint at the home of an elderly couple in Sixmilebridge last night.

It's understood that a man, who was wearing a balaclava and was armed with a shotgun, was attempting to gain entry to a property in Donnybrook, Sixmilebridge around 6pm last night when he was disturbed by a workman tending to the garden.

The gardener was then held for some time at gunpoint while Garda sources say that his daughter and her boyfriend, who were concerned about his whereabouts, then arrived at the house.

They too were held for a time before an altercation ensued.

A shot was fired, and the daughter and her boyfriend received minor injuries, not related to the gunshot.

They were later taken to University Hospital Limerick.

The man who had been carrying the weapon was overpowered, and Gardaí were called

Armed detectives as well as uniformed Gardaí from Shannon Garda Station arrived on scene and arrested a man in his fifties.

He's being questioned at Shannon Garda Station under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act where he can be held for an initial period of 24 hours.

The scene has been sealed off and a forensic examination was carried out.

Gardaí in Shannon are investigating and are appealing to anyone who was in the Donnybrook area between the hours of 4pm and 9pm, and who may have witnessed suspicious activity, to contact them on 061 361 212.
