The latest phase of works announced by Irish Water are focused on the waste water network in Shannon and in Bunratty.

It includes laying a new sewer pipe, and cleaning the system in a bid to rid the town of a persistent odour that has been reported there for a number of years.

Works have already been carried out at Tradaree Plant, with more to take place there this summer, while Regional Information Officer Aisling Buckley says they're looking at the whole network and the treatment plant together.

Irish Water says Shannon is a priority, and has rejected fears that their plans are just a quick fix.

Those concerns have been raised by Independent Councilor Gerry Flynn, who says works need to be carried out as soon as possible, if Shannon is to attract more major employers.
