Irish research links blood clots to dental plaque bacteria

New research out today shows that dental plaque bacteria could trigger blood clots.

The finding by scientists at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the University of Bristol could lead to the development of new treatments for heart disease.

The study is one of several topics being debated at a major three-day conference on microbiology which gets underway in Dublin today.

Dr Evelyn Doyle, a lecturer at U-C-D, says this new research highlights the bacterial threat from plaque forming on the surface of the teeth.
