Irish Rail Says Govt Decision Will Outline Future Of Crusheen Railway Station

Iarnród Éireann says a government decision will outline the future of Crusheen Railway Station.

The rail stop in the north Clare village has been closed to passenger traffic since 1976 despite frequent calls from politicians, activists and residents of the area for it be reopened.

Census 2022 found that Crusheen has the youngest population of any town in the county with an average age of 33 while Clare has the joint-third-lowest proportion of train users nationwide.

Responding to a question from Meelick Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe at the Oireachtas Transport Committee, Iarnród Éireann CEO, Cooraclare native Jim Meade says Crusheen will only see its station come back into use if the government decides to fund it.
