The US and Iran are set to sign what will be described as an ‘outline for a peace agreement’ in Geneva this Friday.

The deal will see the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days, the end of the US Naval blockade of Iranian ports, the release of $24bn worth of frozen Iranian assetts and according to Reuters, the US and its allies will have to produce a $300bn reconstruction plan for Iran.

In return Iran’s nuclear programme will be discussed over a further 60 days of talks, but Israel says the truce will have no impact on its operations in Lebannon.

Hassan Famaraz who’s living in Ennis has told Clare FM’s Morning Focus the Iranian people are the biggest losers from the deal, as their voices are not being heard and they remained oppressed from all sides.

A Professor of Politics at the University of Limerick, however, claims the possibility of a lasting peace in the region is far from certain.

Neil Robinson says hostilities between Israel and Lebanon have the potential to reignite the wider conflict at any moment.
