Investigation Launched into Arson Attack on Pensioner’s Louth Home.

Gardai believe a house fire in Drogheda, which left an elderly woman with serious burn injuries, may have been started deliberately. 

Officers are also praising the actions of a neighbour who suffered burns while rescuing the woman.

At around 1 o'clock this morning, Gardaí and Emergency Services were called to a house fire at Cord Road, Drogheda.

It’s understood a woman in her 70s was asleep in the house when the fire broke out. A man in his 30s believed to be a neighbour, entered the burning building and managed to rescue the pensioner. 

She was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda with severe burns and is now due to be transferred to St James Hospital in Dublin as she's said to be in a serious condition. The man in his 30s was also taken to hospital – but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening. 

The scene has been preserved for a forensic and technical examination.

Gardaí believe the blaze may have been started deliberately. They're appealing to anyone who was in the Cord Road, Oulster’s Lane Sandyford Terrace, Thomas St. or Scarlet St. areas of Drogheda between 12.30 and 1 o'clock this morning to contact Drogheda Garda Station
