The Department of Education says the viability of a West Clare school is ‘a cause for concern’
The comments come in a report which has been published following an inspection of Baltard National School near Doonbeg.
Baltard National School had one mainstream class teacher and just nine pupils shortly before this inspection was carried out by the Department of Education.
In their evaluation, officials state development there has been ‘extremely limited’ in recent years – the report finds that many of the students enrolled migrate to the Baltard area for short periods, and that some children from the locality attend other nearby primary schools by choice.
As a result, officials say Baltard’s ‘viability is in question’ and a ’cause for concern’ – in response, the board of management state they are ‘in the process of making a submission to the Department’
The report comes two months after it was revealed that the Department had already held talks on the future of Baltard National School, and also Scropul National School, Mullagh.
