Inspection Finds “Poor Standard Of Cleanliness” At South-East Clare Nursing Home

A “poor standard of cleanliness” is just one of the negative findings included in a new report on a south-east Clare designated centre for older people.

An unannounced HIQA inspection of Athlunkard House Nursing Home on December 7th found that the management system to monitor cleanliness was not fully effective, resulting in “visible dirt” in places.

Inspectors noted issues with cleanliness management as checklists and environmental audits hadn’t been effective in identifying areas where the cleaning service could improve.

Toilet cabinets were found to be “heavily soiled”, curtains were “heavily stained”, some windowsills had visible dirt and kitchen equipment, water dispensers and tabletops were found to be “visibly unclean”.

The report claims residents’ rights weren’t always supported or facillitated as evidenced by one resident not being able to shower at their time of choosing, while another wasn’t able to have a bath because their bath wasn’t plumbed.

With regard to record-keeping, it was observed that the provider is a pension agent for 13 residents and despite being responsible for holding residents’ money in a bank account, records didn’t clearly outline how residents’ finances were being maintained.

The facility was found compliant in six areas and substantially-compliant in five others.

The provider committed to rectifying the issues identified and has confirmed cleaning systems have been reviewed, a new cleaning schedule has been implemented and awareness of residents choice around shower or bath times has been promoted.

In addition, the provider said the findings of a report on the management of residents’ financial records will be implemented by the end of June.
