Two Shannon men who saved two young boys from drowning at Doughmore Bay last August have been named as the recipients of Clare FM’s Local Hero Award 2023.
This comes ahead of the Best of Clare Awards which takes place in the Old Ground Hotel tonight.
Ian Bolger and Darren Byrnes will receive Clare FM’s Local Hero Award for 2023 at the Best of Clare Awards in the Old Ground Hotel tonight.
The two Shannon residents will be honoured for their bravery and selflessness after they saved the lives of two boys who got into difficulty while swimming in Doughmore Bay near Trump International Hotel Doonbeg on the 13th of August of last year.
After the two boys found themselves struggling in a rip current, Ian managed to retrieve one of them while Darren attempted to help the other who was later air-lifted by Shannon-based Rescue 115.
Darren described the feeling of putting his own life at risk to save one of the boys.
With Water Safety Awareness Month 2023 currently ongoing, Ian and Darren are adamant about using their award to highlight the importance of taking the proper precautions while in the water.
Ian said that swimmers need to be aware of the threat posed by rip currents in particular.
Both men will receive their award tonight at the Best of Clare Awards 2023 which takes place in the Old Ground Hotel tonight.
