Hugo Chavez loses battle with cancer

Hugo Chavez – Venezuela’s outspoken and charismatic President – has died aged 58, after a two year fight against cancer.

He was famously critical of America and once called on Queen Elizabeth to give the Falklands back to Argentina.

His death ends his 14-year rule of the South American country and a week of mourning has now been declared.

Ireland’s President, Michael D Higgins, said Mr Chavez had achieved a great deal during his 14 years in office, particularly in the area of social development.

While, the Tánaiste  and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore described him as important figure on the international stage, as well as in his own country.
